A couple of years ago producer Peter Rix approached me and asked if I was interested in creating a show that would eventually be called VELVET. Even from a distance this man reeked of disco. Fresh from witnessing a robust version of the variety show La Clique, he liked what he saw � a fabulous audience hungry for a great time. He wondered what could be born if you were to add disco to the variety mix along with the secret ingredient of Marcia Hines.

VELVET is a nightclub and a state of mind � a fantasy. Inspired by Studio 54, a club famous for its wild parties and hedonism but also ultimately for its culture of acceptance � blind to colour, creed, class, gender, size, and sexuality. VELVET is a celebration of that freedom.

On one level, VELVET is an amalgam of variety and concert forms that offers sheer entertainment to a disco soundtrack - along with a sprinkle of disco 'glitter', of course. On another added level we chart the progression of a young man on a path of self-discovery. Inside VELVET he witnesses acts of abandon, glamour and freedom.

It was an exhilarating rehearsal period. Sensational performers from around the globe arrived in a humble warehouse space in suburban Sydney, to be involved in a new show hopefully more cohesive than the stock standard variety put-together, with performers they'd never met and often from genres they'd never ventured into before. The thrill of the cast was infectious and they inspired each other to new heights. Added to this, an A-team of creatives and technicians was assembled. And all to a pumping disco soundtrack.
